The limited activity during the pandemic does not only adversely affect the human condition. We are required to be critical and creative in solving these problems. In other words, we are optimizing the technology during the transition from onsite activities to virtual ones (online meetings, distance learning, online shopping, etc.).
Entering the first year of the pandemic, the term Metaverse become a public issue. Generally speaking, Metaverse is a virtual world where users can interact in real-time without any restrictions. It’s like real life: people can work, play, meet, and so on. Metaverse users can utilize immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality. It can create sensations like the real world.
The Term “Metaverse”
The term ‘Metaverse’ was stated in 1992 in Neal Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash: a combination of the word ‘meta’ which means ‘beyond’ and ‘verse’ from the word ‘universe’. In Snow Crash, the story goes that humans can enter 3D spaces and interact with each other, using digital agents (avatars) as their identity.
The emergence of this Metaverse certainly affects the lifestyle where people are increasingly sophisticated after this pandemic ends. Moreover, the education sector was unprepared to make any significant anticipation in dealing with pandemic conditions. However, immersive technology becomes the ultimate solution as the education sector can minimize this pandemic phase.
Let’s imagine if this immersive technology is present in everyday human life. The culture of employees who have to hold meetings in one place or another, or the desire to travel without cutting the time we have, sooner or later begins to fade due to the sophistication of this immersive technology. Furthermore, the teaching and learning activities do not require educators or students to attend the classroom because the learning and teaching objectives are still achieved.
Of course, the development of technology like this will facilitate human life in carrying out daily activities. Starting from cutting time, energy, money, and so on. The users can upgrade their creativity in this immersive world.
